Junior Doherty selected for National Youth team trial

JUNIOR rider William Doherty has been selected to ride the National Youth Academy trial race at Corkagh Park on Sunday week.

Doherty, 11, was third to Moynalty and Orwell Wheelers riders in the Cycling Leinster selection race last month and is one of six riders from the region put forward for next weekend’s event.

He is joined from Leinster by three Orwell riders and two contenders from Moynalty in the U12 category, the juniors all looking for a place on the National Youth Development Team.

Father Dermot said: “William is focused but realistic. He hasn’t had much road time, but fingers crossed he can enjoy himself and have a good trial.”

He added: “He’ll be on the turbo after rugger practice today and on Friday before soccer practice. Next Saturday sees him playing outside centre against St. Mary’s College, from where he’ll do a recovery spin before the big day. We’re very excited for him.”

Sign on opens at 10am on Sunday, February 15 for all races with the U12 boys event off at 10.30am. Go Willo!
