A3 National Champs, again

IN a poignant tribute to the late Martin Vereker, St Tiernan’s CC has once again battled to be crowned the Champion Team at the A3 National Championships.

Vereker lead the team to victory in 2014, before sadly passing away suddenly later that year, so it was with determination to uphold his standards that a squad of six headed to Cong in County Mayo for this year’s renewal.

With 40km to go, St Tiernan’s got in the break that got away and pulled out a gap of over one minute. Attacks on the second last climb brought them back and it was anyone’s game with 7km remaining.

Cormac Daly of iBike seized the day, attacking to win, but the clock continued to tick for the team prize and Barry Walsh, James Kelly and Stephen Murphy rode in on the limit to secure it.

A couple of days later John McGettigan bounced back from his efforts in Cong to become the A3 Leinster Hill Climb Champion.
